Technological Advancements to drive the Demand for Weather Information Technologies

Forecasting of weather has evolved with advancements in technology. These technologies help to predict short-term severe weather events to long-term seasonal forecast. With drastic changes in weather conditions, it has become important to predict weather conditions and prepare for its effects. Predicting weather condition is difficult due to many variables, however, the evolution of technologies and supercomputers have made it easy to predict the world weather conditions. There has been an increase in demand for weather forecast by agricultural sector to plan their agricultural activities accordingly.

According to the latest study by Future Market Insights (FMI), the weather information technologies market in APEJ is expected to register 5.4% CAGR in terms of value during 2017-2027. APEJ market is expected to witness growth due to rising demand from agriculture and defense sector. Moreover, increasing investment in road, rail and sea transportation is anticipated to drive the demand for weather information technologies in APEJ region. The APEJ weather information technologies market is also expected to exceed $200 million by 2027 end.

Weather Information Technologies Market

Emerging technologies to allow better weather forecasts

Weather forecast technologies are rapidly evolving making it easier to predict, analyze and distribute accurate weather conditions using specific weather data produced by the meteorological department. With the introduction of 5G mobile network meteorologists will be able to predict rainfall and other weather conditions. For instance, Met Office Scientists in the UK believe that changes in signal strength will help to map rainfall in real-time. Moreover, combining datasets with the information will help to accurately forecast rain.

Collaborating data collected by the 5G system with the existing system of measuring 15 radar stations to track the rainfall will result in the most powerful forecasting system in the UK.

Leading market players are also launching solutions to accurately forecast weather conditions. For example, IBM in collaboration with National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) is planning to introduce weather forecasting models. These models will be developed using IBM OpenPOWER technologies and power systems. These models will be optimized to run on IBM’s POWER9-based systems, which will be released by the end of 2017. The model will offer detailed information on the storm and other weather conditions and how will they evolve. This model will forecast changes in weather condition well in advance at both county and sub-county level.

Rising need for better weather forecasting solution for aviation

70% of traffic delays in U.S. National Airspace system is caused due to bad weather, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). To avoid delays and enhance traffic management, there is a need for a solution to provide most accurate and timely information on weather condition.

With increasing use of autonomous drones by companies like Domino’s Pizza, Amazon to deliver the order, these companies are realizing the need for weather data to safely deliver the order. According to Marcus Johnson, a research aerospace engineer at NASA, the weather report or data for drones will be based on multilayer system including sensors, ground-based weather gauges. Hence the technology or solution can be expensive.

Many companies are planning to introduce new technologies at Meteorological Technology World Expo 2017. For instance, Teconer will demonstrate Road Condition Monitor (RCM) 411, MeteoGroup and KISTERS will showcase newly developed HydroMaster, a cloud service providing weather information, more such products and solutions will be introduced at the expo scheduled in October 2017.
