Technology has greatly changed how humans live their daily lives and education has also benefitted tremendously. Educational institutions have taken up the responsibility to create a sustainable environment for language learning. Towards this end, EdTech enterprise has initiated connections with eminent scholars, to make important contributions to language learning by developing technological solutions. To address how the full potential of technology can be used to propel language learning, EdTech is using support from the Harvard Graduate School of Education based XMedia Lab, the U.S.-China Youth Education Solutions Foundation, Professor of Literature at Harvard University Doris Sommer, and Co-founder of the Harvard XMedia Lab Perry Gao, to co-host the ‘Education Technology and Language Learning Seminar 2018’ at the Harvard University Faculty Club.
Eminent Speakers Participate in the Seminar
In the course of the seminar, prominent scholars and industry experts from different parts of the world shared their knowledge and ideas relevant to technology and language learning. The speakers comprised members of the National Science Board, appointed by the U.S. President, a Turing Award winner, executive dean of the Harvard Engineering School, a director from the Harvard Technology Education Program, among others.
Scholars participating in the seminar exchanged their ideas about using technology to positively impact learning, and urged teachers to help in the refinement of relevant technology to work without compromising on sociability and creativity. They also pushed people to use an all-round approach towards education to encourage imagination and passion in learning.
Applications of Virtual Classrooms for Language Learning Discussed
The seminar ended with a discussion about the efficacy of utilizing technology to improve learning. The participants showed how teachers can make use of virtual classrooms and change different teaching methods to boost smart learning processes and deeper interactions. They also demonstrated the use and challenges of adopting online language teaching courses, and explained real-world examples such as Gogokid, a popular EdTech product being used in China for the same.
The seminar developed various cutting-edge ideas, and sources of technology, education, and language. The hosts of the seminar, Doris Sommer and Perry Gao showed promise for many more events such as these in the future, where eminent scholars and researchers from various sectors could freely exchange their experiences and thoughts to make use of the different innovations in technology to boost and spread the average human’s capabilities to learn and grow.
